Aba Blues
DESCRIPTION
The quiet lives of Amara, a young tailor in Aba, Eastern Nigeria, and her husband Uzor, a devoted painter, are rocked to their core when Dirim, Amara’s ex and the man who once held her heart returns from Oxford, five years after he abandoned her for life abroad. While everyone knew Dirim was the love of Amara’s life, it was Uzor who stayed, who held her through the heartbreak, the secret pregnancy, and the harrowing abortion arranged by her overzealous mother. So imagine Amara’s surprise when Dirim walks into her living room which also serves as a makeshift tailoring shop, pretending to need a new outfit. Despite her initial protests, he convinces her to treat him like any other customer, willing to pay handsomely for her work. But as Amara leans in to take his measurements, it becomes painfully clear that those buried feelings, now entangled with grief and anger, are clawing their way back to the surface. While Dirim plays his dangerous game of seduction, Amara wrestles with her mother’s venomous tongue never missing a moment to remind her daughter of her shame, her sins, and her “second-hand” worth. To her mother, Amara is lucky any man took her at all. Unbothered by Amara’s marriage or the scandal it could spark, Dirim schemes further, offering her a business opportunity to sew for a Lagos designer. But Amara, who’s never cared for the dismissive glances of Lagos elites towards Aba tailors, refuses. Still, Dirim presses on, and grief begins to blur into longing. Despite Alero’s warnings to return Dirim’s clothes and stay far away, Amara finds herself spiraling. A heated confrontation with her mother leads to an emotional breaking point and in a moment of weakness, she gives in to Dirim. The guilt that follows threatens to destroy her. And yet, Uzor, gentle, knowing, and still loving, asks her to stay, promising his love will be enough for both of them. In the end, Amara chooses her husband. Because whatever she and Dirim had is gone— and all that remains is the ache of what could never be.
